16 avril Star Wars - The Clone Wars - Wild SpaceI got a book from Audible ... Star Wars - The Clone Wars - Wild Space (by Karen Miller). Nothing too extraordinary, just another story involving Jedi, Sith, Senators, during the clone wars. But I came across a very nice part of the book, which either the author is smart enough to understand the Star Wars mythos or she just inadvertently did something which created a nice piece. Fieldwork first. Bail Organa, Leia Organa's adoptive father, seemed to gain step ups in fame during the Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. In fact the Jedi end up actually giving him one of the twins - baby Leia. He has been in and out of the prequel trilogy, but still how he became such an integral part where Jedi, the way Obi-Wan and Yoda trusted him so much, always evaded me. And that is where this book comes in handy. I have read (rather heard) of Bail's exploits in other books, but I think this is the book which actually shows how he becomes a trustworthy partner of the Jedi. The incident in the book involves Bail getting an intelligence that Sith are planning something on some planet (I forget the name of the planet). Bail informs Ben Kenobi who finds that the planet ... does not exist. Bail's source will not talk to anyone else and he needs a Jedi (Ben) for the mission, so in a very wonderfully written scene, the two end up going on a mission. But that's where the fun begins. Two very powerful charterers from the Star Wars universe - one the Jedi master and other one of the honest senators from Alderaan. They are stuck together for the duration of the mission. They mistrust each other (rather never have had reasons to trust one another). Stuck on a small plane, and hopping from one place to another over days, they are seen constantly bickering to respecting to trusting each other over the course of journey. This part is very well written, and the interaction between them is amazingly described. How they do not know each other to the point where they got to work together. The conversation is the highlight of this whole section. It also bridges part of the gap between how Bail from being a Senator from Alderaan became trustworthy partner of the Jedi that eventually leads to him becoming the father of Princess Leia. An ordinary book with an extra ordinary section. "Senator Organa" "Yes, master" "Rise" Must read for everyone. ![]() 22 avril The Printing Press Nearly Ruined GutenbergJohann Gutenberg obtained the capital he needed to perfect his revolutionary printing press by forming a partnership with a wealthy investor named Johann Fust. The agreement would nearly ruin him. Gutenberg began experimenting with metal typography after he had moved from his native Germany to France around 1430. Knowing that wood-block type involved a great deal of time and expense to reproduce because it had to be hand-carved, Gutenberg (c. 1400-1468) concluded that metal type could be reproduced much more quickly once a single mold had been fashioned. His first efforts enabled him to mass-produce indulgences, printed slips of paper sold by the Catholic Church to absolve sins. With a loan from Fust, Gutenberg went on to develop a high-quality oil, copper, and lead-based ink that has faded little over the centuries. He also adapted mechanical technologies from other industries such as textiles, where patterns were stamped on fabric. The result was a printing press that could reproduce texts much faster than scribes could hand copy them. At the 1455 Frankfurt Book Fair, Gutenberg demonstrated the power of the printing press by selling copies of a two-volume Bible for 300 florins each. Though this was the equivalent of approximately three years' wages for an average clerk, it still represented a savings compared to a handwritten Bible, which could take a single monk 20 years to transcribe. The money Gutenberg earned at the fair was more than enough to pay off his debt to Fust, but instead of paying the interest on his loan, he invested in further research and development. Fust sued, and the court's ruling not only effectively bankrupted Gutenberg, it awarded control of the type used in his Bible, plus much of the printing equipment, to Fust. So, while Gutenberg ran a print shop until just before his death in 1468, Fust became the first printer to publish a book with his name on it. 20 janvier Tom Bombadil !!! Why ??A mysterious and powerful being, called by the Elves Iarwain Ben-adar (Oldest and Fatherless), who dwelt in the valley of the Withywindle, east of the Shire. What kind of being he was has never been certainly discovered, but at some stage in the past, he seems to have settled at the edge of the Old Forest, setting himself boundaries, but boundaries within which his power was extraordinary. Tom was a creature of contradictions, one moment defeating ancient forces with hardly an effort, the next capering and singing nonsensical songs. He appeared as an old man, at least in hobbit eyes, with a wrinkled and ruddy face, bright blue eyes, and a bristling brown beard. He was said to be taller than a typical hobbit, but too short to be a Man, so he seems to have been about five feet in height. His costume consisted of a blue jacket and yellow boots, and he wore an old and battered hat, surmounted by a feather. He seems to have preferred to wear a swan-feather in his hat, but before he met Frodo and company on the banks of the Withywindle, he had acquired the feather of a Kingfisher instead. In his own house, rather than a hat, he wore a crown of autumn leaves, perhaps revealing something of the elemental powers he possessed. Check these links: |
